Around a Butterfly is one of the most rhythmic and fast-moving pieces on the forthcoming album Filum by braem. The piece captures the image of flying around a butterfly and observing it from every side — an energy of discovery, joy, colour and movement. Against the stillness of the rest of Filum, this is where liveliness breaks through.
The track was recorded in a single twelve-hour day at Audioworx studio in rural Brabant, together with sound engineer — a trusted collaboration that goes back to secondary school. Overdubbed multiple viola layers beneath the guitar; live, the piece is performed as solo guitar with the viola recordings as backing track. What sets this piece — and braem as a whole — apart is the choice of guitar in a genre dominated by piano. Bram plays without effects, one instrument, direct communication between player and listener.
